SEO Vocabulary
1. Bot / Robot - this is the part of the search engines mechanism which allows them to surf through your site and get all the information that they need to place your site on precise position under some phrases.
2. LINK - part of the text (hypertext) which is placed on your site.
3. PR/Page Rank - name of the google algorithm which at the end shows you the “strength” of your site in scale from 0 to 10. It’s not obligatory to have good position in google but it’s better to have some PR than not heaving it at all;)
4. BL/Back Link/Link Popularity - this is the number of links that lead to your site from some other sites than yours. At this time this is almost impossible to check exact number of those links couse google shows you only some random links, yahoo will show you everything that robots could get from your old version of webpage, new one and the one that never existed;)) The closest results you will get on MSN search engine by typing “link: example.com” .
5. External Links - this links are the links that lead from your site to some other sites. Usually it is not the bad thing to have that kind of links, but only few. Big number of external links will make your site wick.
6. Fresh Site Bonus/FSB - google algorithm which gives some bust to the young websites. I’m quite sure this thing doesn’t work:))
7. UserAgent - the name that robots and search engines give you - for example: Googlebot/2.1 (+http://www.google.com/bot.html).
8. Cloacking - it’s illegal SEO trick. It presents some other than oryginal webpage for robots and users - oryginal webpage is hidden from robots and users. Usually in this trick UserAgent comes in handy.
9. mod_rewrite/friendly urls - technique which allows you to change bad looking php urls which are not welcome by search engine robots (index.php?param1=value1¶m2=value2) into nice looking links (index.html/param1/value1/param2/value2/)
10. DC/Data Center - name for the search engines databases. Usually different data centers shows different results for the same phrase that we are looking.
11. SEO Directory - name for the link directory which uses mod_rewrite technique.
12. Spam - technique which allows to increase webpage position on phrases which are not relevant for this website.
13. Filter - mechanism which decrease website position in search engine for some phrases as a penalty for spamming, cloacking, etc.
14. Sandbox - mythical filter which as legend say use massive decrease for many phrases…
15. Ban - if you are banned your site is thrown away from the search engine. To see if our address is banned type in google “site: example.com” if you do not see any results it means your site is no longer indexed in google;>
16. Backup/Resource Base - collection of your own websites, directories, forums where you can put links to other websites.
17. Sitemap - this is special kind of subpage which shows index - structure of your website, in other words has all your internal links categorized in a tree.
18. Content - simply the content of your webpage.
19. TrustRank/TR - revolutionary algorithm which in the future will supersade Page Rank.
20. SEO/Search Engine Optimization - name which describe process of websites positioning and optimization.
21. SERP/Search Engine Results Page - search results.
22. tPR/Toolbar PageRank - Page Rank scale script which can be seen on web browsers toolbars or directly on some webpages.
23. rPR/Real PageRank - it is a shortcut for “real website Page Rank” couse google for its self makes updates every day and for users shows updates every 3 months. (I am not so sure about those three months, but mostly people say it is something like that)
24. Duplicate Content - this is the situation when same content is shown on couple pages. If the content similarity is high google can ban this kind of webpage.
25. Redirect - user/robot redirection to the other site.
26. Redirect 301/R301 - similar to the definition above, only this time not only robot/user are redirected to the other site but also Page Rank and site position in search enginge is redirected also.
27. Anchor - name under which the link is shown.
28. Invisible text - parts of the text on the website which is not visible for users but search engines can see this text.
29. Googlebot - this is the way that google search engine is presented for the user, when it visits website.
30. Indirect Link - link which redirects to the other web address, for example 301/302 redirection.
31. Direct Link - most valuable link for the person which tries to increase website position.
32. Link nofollow - link with nofollow attribute (rel=”nofollow”) - has no real value.
33. Alt - image attribute where you can describe the image. This attribute is shown when image can’t be loaded, for example in text web browsers.
34. Link Directory - for some people it’s the only way to get some back links to their pages. The best option to choose are those link directories which already have their pages indexed in google and allows you to put direct links to your site.
35. AnchorPR - in other words link value.
36. Suplement result - separate google index of webpages. Websites from this index are always on the last positions. Usuallyto the suplemental results goes subpages of the website.
37. Internal Linking - it is linking inside the same domain.
38. The differece betwean sites with WWW and without WWW - the differnce is that the www.domain.com is treated as subdomain from the domain.com so there can be a situation where Page Rank for those two domains is different. But also it is possible to make search engine look at those two domains as similar.
39. Penalty 31/ -30 - new kind of filter which decrease your page ranking over 30 positions.
40. AdSense - Google partnership program which allows you to make some money on your webpages.
41. AdWord - Google partnership program which allows you to spend some money on your webpage:)
42. GoogleBomb - mass linking technique to the page with only one anchor text.
43. Spamdexign - mass placing links on different sites ( forums, guest books, blogs ) - this is completely different than GoogleBomb
44. Link Farms - webpages that were created for mass placing links to increase subpages ratings.
